USA Men Fight Off Spain To Claim 118-107 Win And Olympic Gold Medal

Riding 27 points from Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat) and 20 from Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers), the 2008 U.S. Men's Olympic Team (8-0) dethroned reigning FIBA World Champion Spain (6-2) in a fight-to-the-finish 118-107 victory that earned it the gold medal and the USA's eighth consecutive double-digit win Sunday afternoon at Wukesong Arena in Beijing, China. In addition to Wade and Bryant, LeBron James tallied 14 points and Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony each scored 13 points to round out the USA's double-digit scorers.

USA Mens Basketball Team this year member Lebron James

USA Basketball

Born: December 30, 1984
Akron, OH
Hometown: Akron, OH
Residence: Cleveland, OH
Ht: / Wt: 6'8" / 250 lbs
Olympics: 2004
Event(s): Men's basketball
Position: Guard/forward

More court time
Superstar LeBron James will make his second Olympic appearance in Beijing, but expect him to spend more time on the court as opposed to the bench, where he spent most of his time in Athens. Following his rookie season in the NBA, James was among many late additions to the team, which failed to win the gold medal for the first time since 1988. He appeared in each of Team USA's eight games en route to the bronze medal, but averaged only 11.4 minutes and 5.4 points a game. After the tournament, USA Basketball changed its selection process to focus on younger and more-devoted players, and James was one of the first stars to make the commitment. He was named a tri-captain for the 2006 World Championships, along with Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade.

Though he's purported to be the Chosen One, LeBron James has only won bronze at the Olympics and World Championships. Getty Images Though he's purported to be the Chosen One, LeBron James has only won bronze at the Olympics and World Championships.

Making progress
The U.S. men's basketball team again won bronze at the '06 Worlds, but James and the new wave of U.S. stars were at the forefront. Anthony (19.9), Wade (19.3) and James (13.9) led the team in scoring, and James was the team's leading rebounder (4.8) and second in assists (4.1). James again was Team USA's best all-around player at the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, in which the U.S. went 10-0 to qualify for Beijing. James averaged 18.1 points and a team-best 4.7 assists while shooting 76 percent from the field (73-of-96).

Golden guarantee
During the 2008 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans, James made what few athletes do these days: an Olympic gold medal guarantee. "We will be Olympic champions this year," he told reporters, adding, "Four years ago, I wasn't put in the position I could care. I didn't get to go out and play the way I could. This time I'm a captain and I know we are going to be a very tough team to beat." James was selected an NBA All-Star in all but his rookie season, yet his first year was still a good one: After being selected No. 1 overall, he was named Rookie of the Year, becoming the youngest player ever to receive the award.

China's chosen one?
James could arguably be the most popular athlete at the Beijing Games. Basketball is fast becoming a one of the most popular sports in China, and since James is widely considered the best player on the planet, Chinese fans have taken a liking to his game. In October 2007, Nike unveiled the latest version of James' signature shoe in China -- as opposed to the U.S. -- for the second year. His likeness can be seen on billboards all across the country and his jersey goes toe-to-toe in sales with China's own Yao Ming.

The Chosen One
After witnessing the greatness of Michael Jordan, NBA fans wondered if there would ever be a player like him. James may be as close as it gets -- and he knows it, evidenced by the "Chosen 1" tattoo that runs across the back of his shoulders. Jordan is the reason James wears the number 23 for the Cleveland Cavaliers, though James insists he's not trying to be like Mike. He says their games are very different, but James is already rivaling Jordan for the finest all-around NBA season ever. After 2007-08, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, James will be the first player to average at least 30 points, 7.9 boards, 7.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks per game in a season with a minimum of 70 games played. Jordan's finest was 1988-89: 32.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 2.9 steals and 0.8 blocked shots.

Rising star
Never before has a player come to the NBA from high school with the notoriety of James, and he lived up to the expectations. The 19-year-old James helped Cleveland more than double its victory total, from 17 to 35, and became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 points in a game when he put up 41 against New Jersey. He finished the season among the top five rookies in all major statistical categories, leading in steals (1.65 per game) while placing second in scoring (20.9 points per game), third in assists (5.9 per game) and fifth in rebounding (5.5 per game). He joined Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan as the only rookies in NBA history to average more than 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game.

Simply the best
There was never any doubt about James being the best high school player in America in 2003. He was named the National High School Player of the Year and the Parade High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year as both a junior and senior, becoming the first repeat winner in the 47-year history of the Parade award. He was also named the USA Today and Gatorade Player of the Year during both his junior and senior seasons. A three-time Ohio Mr. Basketball, James led St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron to three state championships in his four high school seasons. For his career, James totaled 2,657 points, 892 rebounds and 532 assists.

Multi-talented
James also played football at St. Vincent-St. Mary until quitting his senior year to concentrate on basketball. A first-team all-state wide receiver as a sophomore, James helped the Irish reach the state semifinals his junior year.

USA Mens Basketball Team this year member Deron Williams

USA Basketball

Born: June 26, 1984
Parkersburg, WV
Hometown: The Colony, TX
Residence: Salt Lake City, UT
Ht: / Wt: 6'3" / 205 lbs
Event(s): Men's basketball
Position: Point guard

Deron's debut
One of three point guards on the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team, Deron Williams will make his Olympic debut in Beijing. His first appearance with the senior national team came last summer at the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, where the U.S. went 10-0 and qualified for the 2008 Games. Williams played in all 10 of the team's games, averaging 4.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists (tied for second on the team) in 14.3 minutes per game. He made 19 of 31 field goals (61.3 percent) including five of 10 from 3-point range.

Deron Williams will make his Olympic debut alongside one of his favorite players, Jason Kidd. Nathaniel S. Butler/Getty Images Deron Williams will make his Olympic debut alongside one of his favorite players, Jason Kidd.

No Kidding?
Williams lists Jason Kidd -- who was his teammate last summer and will be again in Beijing -- as one of his favorite players because of the way he plays. After his Team USA debut at the FIBA Americas tournament, Williams was grateful to have played with some of the NBA's best. "It was an honor for me to be on the team with the caliber of guys that I was playing with," Williams says. "I got great workouts everyday and got to learn from some of the best coaches in the game. And I won a gold medal for my country, so I'm definitely very proud of that."

Keeping pace with Paul
Williams was taken in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz with the third overall pick, one spot ahead of Chris Paul, who also will be Williams' teammate on the 2008 Olympic team. Since they came into the league together and play the same position, the two are regularly compared. Paul won the 2006 Rookie of the Year award in a landslide; the one first-place vote Williams received was the only one that didn't go to Paul. But both have enjoyed very successful pro careers in just three seasons. Williams has led the Jazz to the postseason the past two years, in which he started each of the 191 games he's played. In 2007-08, he averaged career-highs in points (18.8) and assists (10.5), the latter of which was good for third in the NBA.

Impressive at Illinois
A star at Illinois for three years before entering the NBA, Williams was the school's highest NBA draft pick ever. He left as the school's career assists leader in NCAA Tournament action (78 in 11 games) and second all-time in career assists (594). His 264 assists his junior year (2004-05) also set a school record for assists in a season. Williams played in all but three games while at Illinois, as he led the school to an 88-16 overall record and three NCAA Tournament appearances. After a 37-2 record in 2004-05, the team advanced to the NCAA title game, but lost to North Carolina. Williams was named to the 2005 NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team and the All-American second team.

Texas two-sport
Before Illinois, Williams was a two-time Texas Association of Basketball Coaches First-Team All-State selection while in high school at The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas. But prior to basketball in high school, Williams wrestled from the age of 5 until he was in the seventh grade.

USA Mens Basketball Team this year member Dwayne Wade

USA Basketball

Born: January 14, 1982
Chicago, IL
Hometown: Robbins, IL
Residence: Miami, FL
Ht: / Wt: 6'4" / 216 lbs
Olympics: 2004
Event(s): Men's basketball
Position: Guard

In need of gold
A late addition to the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, Dwyane Wade will be one of Team USA's leaders in Beijing. After an impressive rookie season with the NBA's Miami Heat, the guard averaged 7.3 points and 17.6 minutes a game in Athens, where the U.S. took bronze. Wade saw much more playing time at the 2006 World Championships, for which he was named a tri-captain with Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. That team also won bronze. But the core of the team remained intact for the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, where the U.S. cruised to a gold medal and qualified for the 2008 Games in the process. However, Wade sat out that tournament following shoulder and knee surgery, meaning he still has yet to win gold for Team USA.

Wade may not yet own a gold medal, but he does have an NBA championship and Finals MVP award. Getty Images Wade may not yet own a gold medal, but he does have an NBA championship and Finals MVP award.

Been there
Unlike many of his teammates on the U.S. squad, Wade does own an NBA championship. The Heat won the 2006 NBA Finals, and couldn't have done it without Wade, who was named the Finals MVP. He averaged 27.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds during the 2005-06 regular season, his third as a pro. He then turned in 28.4 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.9 rebounds that postseason.

Injury riddled
Though Wade has missed games every season of his NBA career, he has especially been hindered the past two seasons, each of which he missed 31 games. Wade hoped to be back at full strength for the 2007-08 season after undergoing shoulder and knee surgery in the off-season, but with the Heat out of playoff contention in early March, Wade opted to rest those still-aching parts for the remainder of the season and get healthy for Beijing.

Becoming a star
Being the No. 5 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and putting together a fine rookie season (16.2 points, 4.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds) achieved Wade a fair measure of fame in the United States. He says he wasn't that popular at the Athens Games, though. "When I went to Athens, I wasn't one of the known guys. So I didn't have to worry about (people coming up to me). I was just chillin'. I watched (Allen) Iverson and LeBron and Tim Duncan and those guys get everybody coming to them and I would just chill. So it'll be a different experience this time around." As of October 2007, Wade's was the most popular jersey in Europe, and as of March 2007, his was the fourth-most popular in China.

Class of '03
Though Wade has clearly made a name for himself, he will likely always be compared with Anthony and James as members of the '03 NBA Draft, especially now that the trio is the centerpiece of USA Basketball. "It's great. Me, LeBron and Carmelo will be linked forever as long as we play the game of basketball. It's great that even though we go through a lot of comparisons during the year, when the summer comes, it's great that we can all come together for one common goal. And get on the same page and try to win a gold medal." Chris Bosh, who was taken one spot ahead of Wade in the '03 draft, also is expected to play for the U.S. in Beijing.

Marquette's marquee player
During his time at Marquette, Wade did his best to bring the Golden Eagles back to national prominence. He took a huge step his junior season when he led his team to a 27-6 record and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four -- Marquette's first trip to the Final Four since winning the national title in 1977. He averaged 21.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.15 steals per game that season, setting the Marquette single-season scoring record with 711 points. He was also the first player from Marquette to be named a first-team All-American selection since 1978. His most impressive performances came during the Golden Eagles' biggest victories, including a triple-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in an upset victory against Kentucky in the Midwest Regional final.

Beijing bound
Tayshaun Prince is making is Olympic debut in Beijing after first appearing for Team USA at the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, where the U.S. went 10-0 and qualified for the 2008 Olympics. Prince appeared in nine of the Americans' 10 games and averaged 7.3 points, 5.1 rebounds (second on team) and 2.1 assists in 17.8 minutes a game. He was 26 of 54 from the field (48.1 percent) from the field including 10 of 28 from 3-point range (35.7 percent). Although he can score, he'll be relied upon as a defensive stopper in the Olympics.

With plenty of scorers already on the team, Prince will focus on defense for Team USA. Getty Images With plenty of scorers already on the team, Prince will focus on defense for Team USA.

Prince of the Pistons
The 23rd overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2002 NBA Draft, Prince didn't get much playing time his rookie season; he played in just 42 regular season games. But in the five years since, he has appeared in every regular and postseason Pistons game (509) and started all but two of them. Detroit has advanced into the Eastern Conference Finals each year since Prince joined the team, and made it to the NBA Finals in 2004 and 2005, winning the championship in '04. He's averaged 12.4 points a game in his career, but Prince's specialty is defense. He's been named to the NBA's All-Defensive Second team each of the past four years.

One of Kentucky's finest
After being named to the NCAA All-America second team as a junior at Kentucky, Prince tested the waters of the 2001 NBA Draft. But he ultimately decided to return for his senior season, after which he was named to the All-America third team. A three-time team MVP, Prince averaged 13.1 points and 5.6 rebounds a game in 135 career college games. He finished No. 7 in school Kentucky history in scoring (1,775 points), No. 2 in 3-point field goals made (204) and attempted (621) and No. 5 in block shots (142).

Dominguez domination
A 1998 McDonald's All-American while at Dominguez High School in Compton, Calif., Prince also was given the George Yardley Award from the Los Angeles Times that year. The honor annually goes to Southern California's best prep player and had previously included NBA players Baron Davis and Paul Pierce. Prince led Dominguez to a 96-9 record in his three years there, which included a state title in 1997. He graduated high school with a grade-point average of 3.3 and was on the honor roll for three years. Prince has two siblings, Tisha and older brother Tommie, who played basketball at Pepperdine.

Atlanta, GA
Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Event(s): Men's basketball
Position: Center

Young at center
The youngest player on the team in Beijing, 22-year-old Dwight Howard will make his Olympic debut in 2008. He was the starting center in nine of 10 games for the U.S. men's basketball team that went undefeated at the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, which qualified Team USA for the 2008 Games. Howard averaged 10.0 points and a team-best 5.3 rebounds in 16.5 minutes a game, while shooting 81.4 percent from the field (35 of 43 field goals), also a team high. He made his Team USA debut at the 2006 World Championships, where he started five of nine games as the U.S. won bronze. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and a team-leading 1.3 blocked shots while shooting 54.1 percent from the field.

Few opponents stand in the way of a dunk by Howard, the reigning NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion. Jesse D. Garrabrant/Getty Images Few opponents stand in the way of a dunk by Howard, the reigning NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion.

Getting to the Games
Howard says the Olympics are something he always hoped to be a part of. "I wanted to be on the Olympic team in 2004 when I first got drafted," he says. "I always wanted to play in the Olympics. The closest my family ever came to the Olympics was when my sister danced in the Opening Ceremony in Atlanta in 1996. To actually have somebody playing in the Olympic Games is very big for my family." Howard says the only event he attended was a baseball game while those 1996 Games were in his hometown of Atlanta.

Master dunker
Despite being so big, Howard is very athletic and versatile. He took the NBA Slam Dunk Contest to new heights in 2008, when he won the event with some of the most creative dunks in history. Before one such dunk, he donned a Superman shirt and red cape. "I've always wanted to be in the dunk contest to show the kind of stuff that I have as a big man," he says. "I wanted people to realize that we can be creative too. I just wanted to go out there and have fun with the fans and show everybody a little bit of my personality." Howard also participated in the 2007 contest, when one of his dunks included him placing a sticker on the backboard 12 feet, six inches off the ground.

Iron man
The 2007-08 season was Howard's fourth in the NBA. He was selected by the Orlando Magic with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft right out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy High School, and became the first NBA player directly from high school to start all 82 games of his rookie season. In fact, Howard has not missed a game since becoming a pro (342 regular and postseason games) and started all but one of those games. In 2007-08, he led the NBA in rebounding (14.2 a game) for the second straight season, was third in the league in field goal percentage (59.86 percent) and was fifth overall in blocked shots (2.15).

Georgia gem
Howard ended his career at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy as the winner of the 2004 Naismith Award, which annually goes to the nation's top high school player. He also was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year, McDonald's National High School Player of the Year, to the PARADE Magazine All-American Team and was a co-MVP of the 2004 McDonald's High School All-American game. Additionally, Howard was Georgia's Mr. Basketball in 2004 after leading his school to the Class A state championship as a senior, when he averaged 25.0 points, 18.0 rebounds and 8.0 blocks a game. SACA was a state runner-up in Howard's junior year.

Goal oriented
Prior to entering high school, Howard wrote down several future goals he hoped to obtain. Among them were leading his high school to a state championship and being the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. Howard's father, Dwight Sr., is a Georgia State trooper in addition to being the Athletic Director of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. Howard's mother, Sheryl, played on the inaugural women's basketball team at Morris Brown College. One of the most gregarious players in the NBA, Howard says his favorite movies are Finding Nemo and Friday.

USA Mens Basketball Team this year member Kobe Bryant

USA Basketball

Born: August 23, 1978
Philadelphia, PA
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Residence: Los Angeles, CA
Ht: / Wt: 6'6" / 205 lbs
Event(s): Men's basketball
Position: Guard

In defense of Kobe
The reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, Kobe Bryant will make his Olympic debut in Beijing. Though he was named to the U.S. men's senior national team in March 2006, Bryant didn't suit up for Team USA until 2007; surgery on his right knee in July 2006 kept him sidelined. But in his first event, the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament in which the U.S. went 10-0 and qualified for the 2008 Games, his performance was exactly what USA Basketball had hoped for: someone who can score if he needs to but puts extra emphasis on defense. Bryant started in each game and was third on the team with 15.3 points per game, but he boasted a team-best 1.6 steals and regularly guarded the opponent's best player. "If they have a great guard, whoever the head of the snake is over there, it's my responsibility to try to take him out," Bryant says.

Representing the country
A 12-year NBA veteran, Bryant has been invited to play on previous Olympic teams but declined. In 2004, he did not play for the team as he was facing rape charges that were later dropped. The timing is right for 2008 -- even though he's been playing with a torn ligament in his right pinkie since February. He opted to put off surgery until after Beijing. "It's a chance to represent your country," Bryant says of the Olympics. "This is our way of being soldiers. This is what we do, is play basketball. It's like our way of representing our country -- on a small scale." Playing for Team USA is something he's always wanted to do. About his first opportunity in the red, white and blue, Bryant said, "I stayed in my uniform all night long the first night I got it. Just because I always wanted to play for the U.S. since I was a kid; my chance was finally here. I was just extremely excited."

With plenty of scorers on Team USA, Byant says he only shoots when he needs to and focuses more on defense. Nathaniel S. Butler/Getty Images With plenty of scorers on Team USA, Byant says he only shoots when he needs to and focuses more on defense.

NBA's finest
The 2008 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team will be rich with talent, but few boast the professional accolades of Bryant. The Los Angeles Laker and three-time NBA champion earned his first NBA MVP award this season after averaging 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals while playing all 82 games in the 2007-08 season. Additionally, Bryant has earned All-NBA honors in each of the last 10 seasons (first team six times), has been named to the NBA's All-Defensive eight times (first team six times) and was voted by the fans as a starter for the Western Conference All-Star Team in each of the last 10 games, leading all NBA players in voting for the 2003 All-Star Game.

Leading Laker
The son of former NBA player Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, Kobe was drafted in 1996 straight out of high school by the Charlotte Hornets at No. 13, but traded within weeks to Los Angeles, with whom he has played his entire career. He was the first player in Los Angeles franchise history to make the transition from high school to the pros. At 18 years, two months and 11 days when he made his NBA debut, Bryant was the youngest Laker to appear in a regular season game (Andrew Bynum has since eclipsed that mark), and the second-youngest in NBA history (behind Jermaine O'Neal and now Bynum). In just his second season, the 19-year-old Bryant became the youngest All-Star in NBA history when he was voted a starter for the 1998 game -- despite starting just one game all year for the Lakers.

Big man on campus
At Lower Merion High in Ardmore, Pa., Bryant became the all-time leading scorer in Southeastern Pennsylvania history (2,883 points), exceeded the marks of Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain (2,359). As a senior, Bryant was named USA Today's National High School Player of the Year after averaging 30.8 points, 12.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 3.8 blocked shots and leading Lower Merion to the Class 4A state title. He was also awarded the Naismith High School Player of the Year, Gatorade Circle of Champions High School Player of the Year and named to the McDonald's All-American Team.

Married man
Bryant spent eight years of his childhood in Italy and speaks Italian fluently. His parents, Joe and Pam, named him after a type of steak (Kobe) seen on a restaurant menu prior to his birth. He has two older sisters, Sharia and Shaya. Bryant was married to his wife Vanessa in April 2001, and they have two daughters, Natalia Diamante and Gianna Maria Onore.

Bosh in Beijing
Chris Bosh will make his Olympic debut in Beijing. He helped the U.S. to an 8-1 record and the bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships, where he made his senior national team debut. At the tournament, Bosh averaged 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting a team-best 65.4 percent from the field. He finished the tournament ranked sixth in field goal shooting percentage. Bosh missed the 2007 summer with U.S. because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Not head of the class
A part of the much-heralded NBA draft class of 2003, Bosh has yet to receive the same amount of attention bestowed upon three of the other top five picks from that year: LeBron James (No. 1), Carmelo Anthony (No. 3) and Dwyane Wade (No. 5), all of whom will be in Beijing. Bosh was selected with the fourth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors, and being in Canada may have affected his celebrity status in the States. But his numbers are worthy of praise: Through five years he's averaging 18.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, with a career year in 2006-07 when he put up career bests of 22.6 points and 10.7 rebounds. Bosh has been an All-Star selection each of the past three years.

Freshman phenom
Bosh played just one year of college ball at Georgia Tech (2002-03) before entering the NBA. He started 31 games for the Yellow Jackets, averaging 15.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks a game, which put him on the 2003 Freshman All-America team selected by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, Bosh led the conference in field goal percentage (.560), which put him aside Antawn Jamison as the only freshmen ever to accomplish the feat. That year Bosh also led the ACC in blocked shots (67) and was second in rebounding (278).

All-Americas abound
While playing for Lincoln High School in Dallas, Bosh was named to the 2002 Parade Magazine All-American First Team, Basketball America All-American first team and USA Today All-American Second Team. Also a McDonald's All-American, Bosh averaged 20.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots as a senior, leading Lincoln to a 40-0 record, the No. 1 national ranking by USA Today, and to the Texas state championship.
