Northwest Florida Realtor: Cleveland Cavs 2011 Picks

Cleveland Cavs 2011 Picks

Kyrie Irving - 6-2, 191 - Born: March 23, 1992 (West Orange, NJ) - College: Duke - Top true point guard in the Draft; at 6-2 with a 6-4 wingspan, has similar measureables to Deron Williams and Chris Paul; unselfish and productive - was the National Champ's top playmaker and go-to guy as a true freshman at Duke; can be dominant or deferential, but always productive; ideal point guard for up-tempo offense, loves to push the ball in the open floor; goes left or right with equal fluidity; extremely creative; high-character kid with fantastic basketball IQ; not the physical specimen John Wall or Derrick Rose were, but still has above average size and strength; excellent finisher at the rim; solid decision-maker; powerful extra gear; efficient shooter (53 pct FG, 90 pct FT, 45 pct 3-pt); battled turf toe injury just eight games into freshman season, but returned to play in NCAA Tournament.

Tristan Thompson - 6-9, 235 - Born: March 13, 1991 (Brampton, ONT) College: Texas - Not ideal power forward size at 6-9, but an extremely long (7-2) wingspan with a solid 235-pound frame; struggled against top competition; lefty; played with Samardo Samuels in high school; moves well without the ball; good but not elite athlete by NBA standards, but extremely active around the rim; high-motor, blue-collar player who doesn't take plays off; footwork and instincts are raw; good in the post over either shoulder and has a nice baby-hook with both hands; good first step but needs to improve his handle; doesn't need plays called for him to be effective; game is almost confined to the low-block with jumper that needs major work; very poor free throw shooter; is a full year older than his class; potential to be a strong rebounder, especially at the offensive end.

DRAFTED BY: Cleveland Cavaliers Round 2: Pick 54

Strengths:

  * Good size and big backside for posting-up
  * Skilled, crafty and competitive
  * Inside/outside threat
  * Smart, understands the game (especially at offensive end)
  * Plays with a chip on his shoulder
  * Good shooter with range, high-percentage shooter from floor and line

Weaknesses:

  * Not overly athletic
  * Inconsistent rebounder
  * Not very quick laterally and on/ball screen defense is lacking

NBA projection:
Second-round pick who could be a good contributor on a winning team off the bench.

Key statistics:
2010-11 KK Hemofarm - Adriatic League: 19.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2.8 apg. FG 59%, 3PT 41%, FT 77%
KK Hemofarm - Eurocup: 17 ppg, 8 rpg, 3.8 apg. FG 59%, 3PT 25%, FT 80%
Maccabi Tel Aviv - Israel 1st division: 9 mpg, 4.9 ppg, 2 rpg, 0.8 apg. FG 57%, 3PT 43%, FT 86%
Maccabi Tel Aviv - Eurolegue: 9 mpg, 4.5 ppg, 1.7 rpg. FG 57%, FT 91%

Cool statistic:
Milan led a highly successful Serbian generation. He won three gold medals during the summers of 2007 and 2008 (u19 World Championship 2007, u18 Eurobasket 2007 and u18 Eurobasket 2008). His performance in Madrid u18 Eurobasket 2007, with 32 points and 14 rebounds, is unforgettable. He was part of the Serbian national team that won the Silver Medal in 2009 Eurobasket in Poland.

Reminds me of:
Less of a rebounder than Kevin Love with Vlade Divac tendencies.

What the Experts Say:
Luka Bassin, head coach, Slovenia/Scout, NetScouts Basketball
"Power forward with great energy and character. Very strong. Very versatile in offense. Can shoot from behind the arc and can use his power close to basket. Can keep good spacing and can make an opportunity for teammates when he is double-teamed. Very good passer. The guy who fits in every team."

Current contract and team:
Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel

Chris Denker and Carl Berman are Managing Partners of NetScouts Basketball, "The International Basketball Connection."

I thought the point guard first pick was a good selection based on scouting ratings. I have a concern CAVS have a bad history when taking anyone that had any injury issues, we will have to wait and hope for the best. I like the second pick Thompson as a backup and no way do I hope they move JJ Hickson just wouldnt make sense have to wait and see on that one too.
